April 13th, 1995

At the now defunct East Village rock club The Spiral, 20 or so audience members are awash in the sounds of reverberating cello, haunting guitars and heavily processed vocals. The darkly blissed-out sounds are being made by four New York City college students — their heads down, locked in concentration, as they hammer out an intoxicating blend of shoegaze, indie lo-fi and slow core.

After the short, intense set is over and the lights fade ... this will become their only public performance.

This is Monochrome, a band lost to time ... until now.

After collecting dust for almost 25 years, a handful of private recordings have been rescued and readied for release.

Before Sigur Rós and the current dream pop renaissance took its rightful place in today’s indie scene, there was Monochrome: four young musicians riding out the last wave of the 90s shoegaze scene. Their songs are hidden gems, waiting to dazzle.
